PRELUDE
Go Down, Moses
(African American Spiritual) | arr. John Leavitt
Wes Kassulke, piano; Doug Friend, percussion

John Leavitt | arrangement © 2004 John Leavitt | all rights reserved | used with permission under One License #A-726973

As we open Black History Month, we acknowledge Go Down, Moses, as one of the most sung spirituals in the mid-19th century. The hymn has 27 verses that tell the Exodus story in which God commands Moses to demand the release of the Israelites. Enslaved individuals sang this song not only to remember the Israelites but also as a song of hope for their own path to freedom. The tune used for this text is called "Tubman” to acknowledge Harriet Tubman, a former slave who led many to freedom on the Underground Railroad. She was known as the “Moses of her time."

CALL TO WORSHIP | Judy O'Donnell, liturgist

Come, all who hunger and thirst for the grace of God. The table is set, and God’s love is poured out for us.

We come with open hearts, ready to receive the gift of God’s mercy and love.

In the bread, we remember Christ’s body, broken for us. In the cup, we taste his sacrifice, given for our salvation.

By grace, we are forgiven. By love, we are made whole.

Let us come with gratitude, rejoicing in the gift of communion, where Christ meets us with open arms.

With thankful hearts, we worship the Lord, who invites us to live in grace!

* GATHERING HYMN

Christ, you Offer us Your Welcome | HYMN TO JOY
Christ, you offer us your welcome; it's a precious gift you give!

You bring reconciliation, and you show us how to live.

You call poor ones from their sadness, you call rich ones from their pride.

You call people who are outcast, telling all to "Come inside!"

In a world that's often fearful, where so many stand alone,
you invite us to your table and you welcome people home.
Then you point us to the strangers that, it seems, nobody sees,
and you say, "These are your neighbors. I am here, in each of these."

Christ, your call to offer welcome is an urgent, mighty call;
you have given us a vision of your way that welcomes all.

May we seek to meet our neighbors in their vast diversity.
As your loved and welcomed people, may we build community.

* OPENING PRAYER

Gracious God, we give thanks for your boundless grace that flows freely into our lives. In your love, you have called us your children, not because of our works, but because of your boundless mercy. Your grace is a precious gift that sustains us, forgives us, and draws us closer to you, even when we feel unworthy. Remind us that your grace and love are for all, even those we believe are undeserving. Fill our hearts with empathy and understanding, so that we may see others through your eyes and embrace them with your unending love. Help us to live joyously as people shaped by your grace—extending kindness, showing mercy, and walking humbly in your ways. Amen.

*  AFFIRMATION OF FAITH | Pastor Monique McBride
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

* GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Every tongue and every nation gather now to praise the Lord! From the world of tribulation come and let your voice be raised. Join us now in congregation. Let the Living God be praised. MORNING PRAYER | Pastor Peytyn Tobin

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE | Pastor Monique McBride

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE

Jonah 3:10-4:1-11 | New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.

1 But this was very displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord! Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning, for I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from punishment. 3 And now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 And the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5 Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, waiting to see what would become of the city.

6 The Lord God appointed a bush and made it come up over Jonah, to give shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort, so Jonah was very happy about the bush. 7 But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the bush, so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God prepared a sultry east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint and asked that he might die. He said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the bush?” And he said, “Yes, angry enough to die.” 10 Then the Lord said, “You are concerned about the bush, for which you did not labor and which you did not grow; it came into being in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left and also many animals?”

These are the words of God for us, the people of God. Thanks be to God.

MESSAGE
God Still Speaks | Jonah | Pastor Doug Johns

THE LORD’S SUPPER

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful think, . . . .

. . . And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ, . . .

. . . And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit onus gathered here, . . .

. . . Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.

Amen.

GATHERING AT THE LORD’S TABLE

all Eternal God, thank you for renewing our hearts and strengthening our spirits at this table. As we step into this new year, may your Word guide our steps, and may our lives reflect the love, hope, and joy of Christ to a world in need. Amen.

* HYMN OF COMMITMENT

Go Forth for God | The United Methodist Hymnal No. 670 (verses 1,2,4)
Go forth for God, go to the world in peace;
be of good courage, armed with heavenly grace,
in God’s good Spirit daily to increase,
till in the kingdom we see face to face.
Go forth for God, go to the world in peace.

Go forth for God, go to the world in love;
strengthen the faint, give courage to the weak;
help the afflicted; richly from above
God’s love supplies the grace and power we seek.
Go forth for God, go to the world in love.

Go forth for God, go to the world in joy;
to serve God’s people every day and hour,
and serving Christ, our every gift employ,
rejoicing in the Holy Spirit’s power.
Go forth for God, go to the world in joy.
