* CALL TO WORSHIP | Brian McComb, liturgist
We gather today to remember the sacrifice of Jesus,
the one who carried the weight of our sins,
the one who walked the road to Golgotha,
the one who died so that we might live.
In the shadows of His suffering, we find grace.
We come to lay down our burdens at His feet,
To reflect on his love poured out for us,
And to find in his passion, our redemption.
Let us now hear the story of that day,
Of those who walked with Jesus,
Those who were called to carry the cross.
Let our hearts be open to the power of His love,
And to the message of the cross that calls us to follow.
We are here to remember, to reflect, and to surrender,
For we know that through his death, we have life.
May this day bring us nearer to the heart of the Savior.
* GATHERING HYMN
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross | The United Methodist Hymnal No. 298 (verses 1,2,3,4)
When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of Glory died;
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ, my God;
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

* OPENING PRAYER
Loving God, on this solemn day, we gather at the foot of the cross, where love and sacrifice meet. As we reflect on the cost of grace, open our hearts to the weight of this moment. Let us not turn away from the pain, but stand in awe of the love poured out for the world. In the silence of this hour, may we be drawn closer to your heart – a heart that embraces even in the face of betrayal, forgives in the midst of suffering, and loves without limit. As we remember Christ’s final words, shape us to live lives that reflect his mercy and grace. Amen.

READING
Seven Last Words: Love Poured Out | Pastor Peytyn Tobin
SCRIPTURE
Mark 15:20-21
| New Revised Standard Version
20 After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
21 They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
These are the words of God for us, the people of God. Thanks be to God.

On the Cross | Lloyd Larson

Behold the holy Lamb of God, on the cross! For us, he sheds his precious blood on the cross! O hear the suffering servant cry, “My God, have you forsaken? Why?” Draw near and see the humble Savior die on the cross. Behold the mighty dead is done on the cross! The battle fought; this is God’s Son on the cross. To heaven he turns his dying eyes: “Tis finished!” now the Savior cries. And then he bows his sacred head and dies on the cross. Behold the Lamb of God who came to take our sins away! O wondrous and redeeming love; a debt I cannot repay! Christ bears our sins upon the cross. Behold his arms extended wide on the cross! Behold his bleeding hands and side on the cross! The sun withholds its rays of light, the darkened skies become as night, the whole earth shakes for Christ is crucified on the cross.

* HYMN
Were You There | The United Methodist Hymnal No. 288 (verses 1,2,5)
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
